Abstract
The Society for Historical Archaeology and the Advisory Council on Underwater Archaeology are the sponsors of the publication of the underwater archaeology proceedings from the January 1989 Society for Historical Archaeology meetings and joint Archaeological Congress. Among the 39 papers published, seven are from a symposium entitled Active State Underwater Archaeology Programs, one is on the recently published federal shipwreck management guidelines, and another presents thoughts on the ethical prohibitions on working for treasure-hunting firms. All are relevant to the advent of the federal shipwreck law. There are also sets of papers from symposia on continental shelf research, small boats in North America, and ships of exploration and discovery research. There are other outstanding papers on shipwrecks from the 16th to 20th centuries. The volume editor is J. Barto Arnold III, who served as the underwater archaeology program chairman for the conference.
