In Poland, conservation work is followed with much public interest. There are nine million works of art in 528 museums and additional millions in castles and churches. The state enterprise Conservation Workshop of Works of Art has a well-earned reputation outside the country. It has affiliated services at its disposal for scientific and historical documentation and technical evaluation. The cooperatives, such as Ars Antiqua, organize their members and certify them with diplomas. The salary of a conservator is fixed by the official pay schedule, which remunerates the kind of work done and not the number of hours spent on it, thus giving the conservator the status of an artist and not of a craftsman. Furthermore, fiscal legislation and a special social security system provide the conservator with necessary security.
