The problem of important works in storage in museums with a different focus is illustrated by Rodin's marble <i>Recumbent Figure</i> in the basement of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. The work needs conservation treatment and a new pedestal, but since the museum which owns it focuses on American art, funding for this piece is not a high priority. A new funding program, made possible by a philanthropic trust, has been instituted in the Philadelphia area to provide funds for conservation in cases such as this so the work can be shown at the Rodin Museum. Other such collection sharing plans with attendant conservation treatment have also been made possible through this program. Federal funding agencies are considering this approach for other areas of the United States.
