Conservation as a discipline has a long history, and may be said to have started in antiquity when man repaired a cherished object. Over the last 200 years there has been a growing awareness of the deterioration of materials and how to overcome this natural process. The paper reviews the early history of conservation, particularly as applied to the field of archaeology and anticipates the further development of the profession in the United Kingdom.
