As a part of the cooperative partnership between the Federal Democratic Republican State of Lower Saxony and the Democratic Republic of Sudan, teams of conservators went to Sudan in 1986 and 1987/88, in order to support the restoration work being done there on pieces in the collections of the National Museum in Khartoum. In 1986, clothing and jewelry, weapons, musical instruments and objects of daily life were restored or conserved. In 1987/88, four wooden stelae from the region of West Equatoria were conserved. The author has selected two projects as examples of this undertaking: the treatment of leather objects with Moroccan leather balsam and the measures undertaken to preserve and consolidate the four stelae embedded in concrete in the courtyard of the museum. The stelae were treated in order to reverse the damage done by insects, the embedding in concrete, weathering, and imperfect former restorations. The conservation program was as follows: 1) securing the original substance; 2) retouching the cracks; 3) conservation of the damaged areas of the wood; and 4) proper upright placement of the stelae.
