Abstract
An archaeologist and a collection manager discuss the serious curatorial problem posed by the long-term storage of archaeological research collections after they have been initially studied. While not proposing alternative methods, the authors point out the vulnerability of paper bags both as specimen containers and data carriers, as well as the acidic paper boxes in which the bags are usually packed for storage. These packing materials require curators to store the collections at a stable and moderately low relative humidity (RH 40% suggested) and to monitor the condition of the collection primarily by checking the external packaging rather than the specimens in order to minimize handling.
