The purpose of this article is to make a forecast about possible improvements in the adhesive and cohesive strength of polymers in the foreseeable future. To do this a fundament will be constructed by briefly reviewing what has been achieved concerning improvements in the mechanical strength of polymers since 1940 when polymer science and technology started to become a field subject to systematic research.
