Abstract
5 to 12 grams of the margins of 6 parchment documents from 1578 to 1788, were treated with HCl to remove the lime and chalk, washed, and burned to CO2. The CO2 was purified and assayed for radiocarbon. The calibrated dates correspond closely with the known dates of the documents, although Seuss's calibration curve permits age ranges or alternative dates. Thus independent corroborative evidence may be necessary in addition to 14C dating. 14C dating is suggested for such documents as the Vinland Map (although it is not stated how 5 g. or more of such documents can be obtained for destructive testing). 5 references. -- AATA
