Abstract
In formulating a filler adhesive for deteriorated leather, the properties sought in this study were: 1. resistance to long-term deterioration, 2. lack of reactivity with the leather, 3. high flexibility, 4. easy reversibility, 5. adequate adhesion, 6. a long working time for modification, 7. correct viscosity, 8. moldability for graining, 9. carveability to remove excess, 10. pigmentability. Numerous polysulfide resin-epoxy-colorant mixtures were formulated in the lab using industrial resins and were used to fill gaps in sample torn, backed leathers. Polysulfide resins alone were not sufficiently viscous and did not adhere adequately to leather. Epoxy, 3-5%, improved adhesion. Sizing leather first with B-72 at contact points allowed the filler to be merely pulled of if desired. Bulking the filler with glass beads and/or powdered pigments increased viscosity and improved carvability.
