Abstract
In direct or gravure printing a roller carrying a design on a screen prints the impression on the leather. In indirect or offset printing, the design roller prints its image on the second, or offset, roller, which prints the leather. In both systems, the printing roller rotates in the direction of the conveyor carrying the leather. Their speeds are synchronized to prevent smudging the print design. With solvent lacquers containing dyes or pigment, the speed of the roller relative to that of the conveyor can be increased to increase the quantity of material applied. Roller printing causes streaking of aqueous pigmented resin finishes. Reverse roller coating is direct printing with the convayor and the print roller running in oppostion. More finish can be applied, and streaking is eliminated. Splits are often reverse roller coated because they are very smooth. Their finishing is described.
