Abstract
This paper deals primarily with the application of continuous color and lacquer coats, i.e., the roll coating process. The gravure printing technique is generally employed. The finish is transferred from the recesses of the gravure roll to the leather. Excess finish is removed from the raised portions of the roll by a doctor blade. Gravure roll and feed roll speeds are independently variable. If the gravure roll speed is greater, the amount of finish applied is increased, the finish is rubbed over the leather (padded effect) and the screen structure disappears. Leather used must be smooth and of even thickness, have good absorbency, be clean, not be too soft or thin. Roll coating can be used in various finishing stages. Both the unidirectional and reverse processes (leather moves in opposite direction) may be used to apply some dyes. Pigment finishes can be applied by the reverse process with almost any binder having good flow properties and adequate viscosity. Top coats of water-or solvent-based nitrocellulose lacquers can be unidirectionally applied.
