The author has divided special effects into three broad groups; 1. smooth visual effects, e.g. aniline leathers, semi aniline effects, pearlized or metallized effects and antiqued effects; 2. textural effects, e.g. embossing and 3. combination of the two, i.e., embossing, coloring and then smooth plating to give smooth feel and appearance of texture in the coloring.
