Abstract
This article briefly introduces the process of identifying and distinguishing pigments with the different particle optical characteristics using polarized light microscope. The characteristics of Qin terra cotta figures' pigments are given and comparison with several famous archaeological sites is outlined. Helped with powdered samples polarized light microscopy and micro-chemistry, ancient inorganic and organic pigments can be identified and rock, ceramic, corrosion product can also be studied.
