The National Trust transport more than one-hundred paintings every year between houses located throughout England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, and conservators' studios, which may be far from the houses. It has not proved practical, nor financially possible, to provide packing cases for these paintings. They have been soft packed, that is, the corners of the frames have been cushioned and the package has been sealed using polyethylene. The monitoring described is to evaluate how well soft pack protects paintings in transit. Temperature, relative humidity, shock, and vibration have been recorded. Results recorded with National Gallery, London paintings packed in Dristyle cases are used as the benchmark. The protection offered by transit frames has also been evaluated.
