Abstract
Experiments with dewatering fluids (supplied under the name Ferromede by Sunbeam Anti-Corrosives, Central Avenue, West Molesey, Surrey, England) in the conservation of waterlogged wood and leather are described based on the principle that when two liquids are mutually insoluble, the surfaces in contact will adjust themselves by spreading: water so displaced by the fluid in question, having the heavier specific gravity, falls to the bottom of the tank containing the dewatering fluid, from which it can eventually be tapped off. Wooden objects removed from a well, in a fragile, waterlogged state, were allowed to remain in the dewatering fluid for six weeks after which they were set aside to dry for 24 hours. No significant shrinkage was observed but the material was in a very brittle condition and receptive to such reinforcing media as resins and waxes. Old waterlogged leather was immersed for a month in a liquor composed of dewatering fluid in which lanolin at 4-ozs. per gallon and Neatsfoot oil at 10 fluid ozs. per gallon has been dissolved. When, after this treatment, the leather had been dried out it was found.
