Ethnographic materials differ from so-called fine arts objects in that they were made primarily for use in daily life or for ceremonial purposes, but the line of distinction is a fine one. Accretions on these objects are sometimes as important historically as the piece itself and must be preserved. In some instances cleaning must be avoided and consolidation only attempted. Often a single ethnographic object may consist of a variety of substances, both organic and inorganic, thus complicating the process of conservation.
