equipment which might be useful in archeological work as well. Con-struction engineers helped develop safe vertical shoring for a pit 50 feet deep in unconsolidated sediments. To protect exposed specimens prior to removal and when jacketing in plaster, the project sprayed or brushed on a temporary plastic coating, Coverlac SC-270, which dried quickly in moist as well as dry conditions without penetrating the surface or contaminating the object, and which could be peeled off readily or dissolved with acetone. For friable and fully exposed specimens a coating of liquid soap was applied first. The staff devised an aluminum and steel grid with spirit levels welded to two adjacent sides and adjustable legs for control measurements, photographs and sketches. Cleaning methods designed to recover microfossils efficiently as well as to free larger specimens from matrix involved the use of a Sweco Vibro-Energy separator; Baron-Blakeslee vapor degreasers with Chloro-thene N.U. as a solvent; a Vibro-Energy finishing mill with plastic pellets and No. 350 thinner (Standard Oil of California); a Secana Corporation mobile unit comprising an S. S. White Airbrasive Model K with air dryer and dust collector, air compressor, 5-horsepower generator, and microscope with multiposition stand and lights; a Uni-hone dry sand-blasting unit for coarser work; and Branson ultrasonic cleaners with Chlorothene as solvent. -- AATA
