fossil Ichthyosaur vertebra was pulverized, extracted and decalcified to yield an insoluble residue. All extracts were examined for protein, peptide, amino acid, and lipid content. The presence of residual iron in the decalcified residue was shown to result in low recoveries of amino acids after acid hydrolysis. A method for the removal of iron before hydrolysis is presented. -- AATA
