Abstract
The article is a description of pollen analysis done on material collected from the underside of a Windsor-style chair. The work was done by Fred Wiseman of the Center for Materials Research in Archaeology and Ethnology at MIT. The unusual chair was made of walnut, uncommon for America of the period, but pollen analysis showed only American species. Analysis done on the fatty residue from under the chair showed the presence of lard oil, commonly used before the introduction of kerosene in the 1860's. Wiseman is developing a reference collection of pollen and oil samples to use in dating furniture. -- AATA
