Abstract
A brief explanation is given of some of the more common mechanisms of oxidative degradation, both photochemically and thermally induced. More detailed discussions are presented for polypropylene, natural rubber, cellulose and keratin. The importance of monitoring to give early warning of oxidation is stressed. Chemiluminescence measurements are suggested as a simple means of monitoring.
