Surveys performed in 1973 and 1974 under the auspices of the Mineral Research and Exploration Institute of Turkey sought to obtain documentation on ancient mines and smelting sites in Turkey and to locate tin deposits exploited in antiquity. The wide distribution of the sites and mines and the isolated character of the operation provide a new scope to man's understanding of ancient metallurgical practices. Either these industrial complexes were operated and controlled by a seasonal work force from major settlements elsewhere, or they were the livelihood of indigenous mountain communities which traded with the lowlands. Although dating was not determined for most of the sites, their existence in remote areas of the Pontus and elsewhere constitutes another challenge for the archaeologist and historian. -- AATA
