This exhibition illustrates some of the more important works from the main artistic traditions: Nok, Igbo-Ukwu, Ife, Owo, and Benin. Of these, Nok, Ife, Owo, Benin, and the Tsoede bronzes seem to be linked, while other traditions, Ifbo-Ukwu, Esie, and Ikom, seem at present to be isolated. In the past 25 years, two dating techniques have been applied, radiocarbon and thermoluminescence. The reliability of radiocarbon dates depends on the precision with which organic material can be associated with the artifacts, while thermoluminescence dates are derived directly from clay, e.g. sculptures or bronze casting cores.
