New bronzes and terracotta figures were discovered during excavation in November 1957, at Ita Yemoo, Ife. Some are full figures of an unknown type. Previous Ife finds occurred in 1910, Leo Frobenus and in 1938, William Bascomb. The author briefly discusses the controversy concerning the origin of Ife art, then describes restoring and preserving the Ita Yemoo finds. He soaked all the bronzes in distilled water, brushing them periodically to remove mud. He then immersed them in a 5 percent solution of sodium sesquicarbonate in distilled water for 3 weeks and then soaked them again in distilled water, testing each used quantity of distilled water (for chlorides) with silver nitrate and nitric acid. When he considered them chloride free he dried them in the sun and coated them with wax. He washed off the terracottas under the tap, taking care not to remove paint. He dried them in the sun, then joined the fragments with water-proof glue.
