In November of 1957 laborers digging to fill a ditch by the side of Ilesha Road, Ife discovered various bronzes which are extensively described in this article. The royal figures were evidently intended for use in a royal ancestor cult. The well known life size heads probably belong to the same cult and are probably also not individual portraits. The smaller heads are more vigorously modelled than the large heads found in 1910 and 1938-9. The author states that the large figure and the pair show markedly African proportions and confirm the view that the art of Ife is essentially indigenous, even though the technique of bronze-casting must have been introduced from the Near East.
