This three part journal article discusses importance, requirements and problems associated with planning, constructing and renovating museum collections storage. Collections should be safe and secure, yet convenient and accessible for receiving, shipping, registration, photography and conservation as well as exhibition galleries and curatorial offices. Part 2 discusses environmental considerations (temperature and relative humidity (Rh)), equipment (air washers, filters) for removing air-borne particulates (pollution) and contaminants, water damage (floods, leaks, condensation), and lighting considerations, including pro's and con's of incadescent and fluorescent bulbs. Parts 1 and 3 cover security and alarm systems, fire detectors (heat, smoke, photoelectric, ionizer), advantages and disadvantages of various fire suppression (extinguishing) systems (water sprinklers, carbon dioxide (Co2) gas, halon, foam, and conservation considerations of various types of construction (building) and finishing materials (eg. alkalinity and dampness of fresh concrete, volatile gases emitted from certain paints and coatings, etc.). This is a reference for the planning, design and construction of storage facilities for museums and art galleries.
