Abstract
This journal article examines weathered crusts on ancient archaeological glass. Chemical analysis by x-ray electron diffraction, differential thermal analysis and electron-probe microanalysis support theories that formation of layers may occur during seasonal temperature and moisture changes, representing successive years and therefore useful in chronological dating of glass. Opponents argue that crusts form even in seawater where temperature fluctuations are minimal. -- CCI
