This journal article describes early restorations and the recent conservation cleaning of the famous oil on canvas painting titled The Night Watch , completed by the Dutch Master painter Rembrandt in 1642. Early accounts indicate numerous treatments , including soaking the canvas in boiled linseed oil by Jan Smit, possible trimming, relining and varnish removal by Jan van Dijk, regeneration by alcohol vapour, and numerous revarnishings resulting in a dark appearance with obscured images. In the 1940's, the City of Amsterdam's Committee on Painting decided to have the varnish removed by a solvent solution of alcohol and acetone, neutralized and removed with turpentine. Documentation by the 'restorer' is vital. This is a reference for the history of fine art conservation and also for artworks by Rembrandt. -- CCI
