This journal article describes emergency procedures during the 1970 Cornell University Library flood. Mold infestations were sprayed with 10% thymol in ethyl alcohol, and badly damaged books with sizing problems and coated paper were wrapped in wax paper and stored in a freezer at minus 30°F. For financial reasons, replaceable books requiring costly conservation treatment or restoration were discarded. Air conditioners, fans and dehumidifiers were used to maintain a suitable relative humidity (Rh) and increase air circulation. This article emphasizes the need for effective disaster planning for library and archival collections, and health and safety requirements for personnel. -- CCI
