Galleting, or garreting, refers to the practice of inserting small pieces, or spalls, of sandstone or flint into the mortar-joints of stone buildings. It is almost entirely confined to two regions, the Weald and Norfolk. Survey of Wealden parish churches indicated that 15% had galleting, but no geological explanation fits the evidence. It seems to have been a mainly 17th-century to 18th-century fashion which spread from two probably independent foci. -- AATA
