Abstract
Metallurgical analyses of knives of this period show that smiths had four different types of iron to select from, and were expert in their use and in the heat treatment of steel. This period in fact shows the best smithing of Iron Age to medieval times. The evidence contrasts with the paucity of evidence for iron smelting and the very few smithies identified.
