Historic buildings were originally painted with a base coat of milk of lime and casein which controlled the absorptivity of the walls, and a transparent topcoat which weathered unevenly to give color variations. Experiments in external and internal redecoration, even in polluted atmospheres, reproduced this effect with an acrylic-based system, with potassium-based systems, and with lime-based systems. -- AATA
