The history of the spectral evaluation technique is reviewed. Originally devised to determine the hiding power of colored pigments, it is equally applicable to test methods based on the comparison of color samples. Without changing the essential nature of the methods, several improvements have been made. The principle has also been applied to tinting strength and transparency test methods. -- AATA
