Abstract
In this 1974 technical report, a number of commonly asked questions regarding the effect of light on paper, hinging prints and drawings, pH, and unframing works of art on paper are discussed. Topics include ultraviolet (UV) radiation, photochemial damage, UV filters, dyes, inks, pigments, photographs, paper quality, infrared radiation, light levels, light meters. Instructions for conservation hinging using japanese paper and starch paste are described. The effects of pH, neutralizing and deacidification are discussed. Procedures for unframing, examining, fumigation, and reframing watercolors and drawings are explained. A list of suppliers is provided. References date from 1951 to 1974. This document is a reference for the care of library and archival collections, and works of art and museum artifacts on paper. -- CCI
