Abstract
Eight age groups of eggs of Plodia interpunctella (Hübner) were collected and incubated at 27°C and 60% relative humidity for 0.5 to 71 hours. The same eggs were then exposed to 2.4°C and 85% relative humidity for 0 to 192 hours to explore the possibility of delaying hatching and to examine larval survival from such eggs. Less than 50% of the eggs under 4.5 hours old hatched after 2-hour exposure to the cold. Slightly more than 50% of the eggs older than 17.5 hours hatched after exposure of 96 hours. None of the eggs exposed for 192 hours at 2.4°C hatched. Survival was greater than 70% for larvae hatched from eggs that were returned to 27°C after exposure, except for those hatched from eggs 17.5 hours or more old at initiation of cold exposure and exposed for 96 hours or more. -- CCI
