This is a compilation of feather treatment descriptions and technology as described by conservators Gibson, Govier, Raphael and Gowers. Treatments reported are: air abrasion with glass beads, storage and insecticidal treatment, prevention of fading during exhibition, aqueous cleaning of a Mangaian headband, aqueous and solvent cleaning (Lissapol N *, Vulpex,Trichloroethylene) of a Rurutuan headdress. Feather technology and its relevance to the choice of cleaning technique is described for contour feathers; plumose and pennaceous. Treatments for featherheads of Kukailimoku and a Japanese feather jacket consist of brushing loose dirt, swabbing with water/Lissapol N followed by Vulpex soap and thylene dichloride. A feather gorget from Tahiti is consolidated with PVA, Vynamul 6515. A review of treatment methods and materials follows. This describes mechanical, dry and wet cleaning, consolidation with polyvinyl acetate, soluble nylon, Catalon, Beva and wax and disinfection using mothproofing, borax paste and powder. The effects of cleaning and chemical agents are outlined; water, anionic and nonionic tergitol detergents, acetone, benzine, ethanol, trichloroethylene, kerosene, hydrochloric acid and ammonium hydroxide. This provides a general review of conservation treatment procedures for feather objects.
