Abstract
This technical note addresses the problem of gap stabilization in environments of fluctuating humidity. Researchers at the Horniman Museum in Great Britain examine the possibility of adapting a water-logged wood treatment. Polyethylene Glycol, in the case of sound wood, must fill the lumens and penetrate the lattice-like arrangement of the fibrils of secondary walls. Wood blocks are waterlogged and dried to produce shrinkage gaps. Immersion in various grades and solutions of PEG follows. Modopeg grade 1500 gives the best results after soaking for nine days at 45 Celsius. This treatment is carried out on two artifacts. Softwoods are slightly more stable than hardwoods after treatment. This describes a treatment for the stabilization of wood.
