Abstract
This bulletin article notes surface characteristics of the gold; red crystalline copper oxide deposit and green crystalline malachite due to migrations from matrix to surface. The general shape is achieved by cutting from a disc and hammering. A flat piece bent and hard soldered forms the cylindrical rod of the center shaft. Ferrules are formed by soldering and then soldered into place and decorated. A sheet of gold is wrapped and soldered around the center spindle prior to positioning. Solder joins have not completely amalgamated with the metal. Incised design and inscription are cut using a metal tracer. Non-destructive quantitative analysis with an X-ray spectograph reveals 82 percent gold, 12 percent silver, 3 percent copper, 3 percent iron and trace iridium. The liquidus state of this alloy is 1045 Celsius, solidus state, 1035 Celsius. Lower melt gold alloy serves for hard soldering. This describes ancient Minoan gold technology.
