The deleterious effects of air pollution on outdoor monuments are discussed, including how they are accelerated by other factors such as wind, rain, frost and biological damage. Several stone monuments in Rome with serious damage are described, and a few examples of monuments brought indoors are cited. The author stresses the need for systematic documentation of all ancient outdoor monuments and the continued pursuit of suitable treatments. -- AATA
