Most black and white photographic materials take on a silvery appearance as a consequence of aging. This paper addresses the occurrence of silvering with reference to negative photographic materials and describes the experimental characterization of this phenomenon. It then discusses thiourea and ammonium thiosulfate treatments which are often recommended for the removal of silvering and demonstrates why these treatments are ill-advised.
