A recent detailed statistical study of the ceramic production from the Macedonian sites of Dikili Tach and Sitagroi enabled the author to propose two broad chronologically successive horizons. The first one corresponds to Marica-Karanovo V (Dikili Tach IIA-B, Sitagroi IIIA); the second one to Gumelnitsa-Karanovo VI (Dikili Tach IIC, Sitagroi IIIB-C). Regional comparisons validate this sequence and make it possible to outline the boundaries of three cultural zones extending over the whole of northern Greece. The first one covers eastern Macedonia and is connected to western Bulgaria and the Gradesnica-Kridovol group; the second one includes central Macedonia and is connected to Vinca; the third one includes Thessaly and western Macedonia. Before any general historical interpretation can be made, it is indispensable to set up detailed regional chronologies, all the more since gaps exist in most of the known stratigraphic sequences.
