Urushi is basically a natural product, and its drying time depends on various factors, e.g., the kind of raw urushi and its water content. In this research, two kinds of urushi were compared: the raw urushi with normal drying time, i.e., normal raw urushi with 22.2% water content; and the raw urushi with quick drying time, i.e., active raw urushi with 27.9% water content. Test samples with about 2%, 4%, 6%, and 10% water content were prepared. They were sampled during the process of making <i>kurome</i> urushi from each type of raw urushi. Each raw urushi ceased to decrease in weight at about 2% water content. In active raw urushi, the drying time did not depend on the water content. In normal raw urushi, humidity had a marked influence on the drying time of the sample with about 2% water content. Good luster and high clearness of the dried urushi film were obtained in the sample of active raw urushi.
