Describes two computerized instruments developed to measure the microscopic features of surfaces. Both have wide potential applications within archaeology, but the use here was on layered structures, specifically human teeth from York and elsewhere, in which dietary deficiencies, etc., could be revealed. Cast replicas can be used where necessary and studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and irregularities or interruptions of growth can be examined.
