Plants or plant remains can indicate, variously, vegetation of ancient mines and smelting activities; human modifications of soils; modern survivals of ancient crops; past environments; intrasite vegetation changes; the influence of ancient trade routes on plant distributions; and buried sites through cropmarks by means of aerial phytoarchaeology in normal photographic, infrared, or radar modes.
