Abstract
The excavation of Kastanas tell situated in the Axios valley in central Macedonia brought to light many Mycenaean sherds in a well defined stratigraphy. Whereas the early sherds from the 14th century BC are generally believed to be imports from the Mycenaean settled land, the later Mycenaean pottery from the 12th century BC or the time period late Helladic IIIC, is thought to be local imitation. On the basis of neutron activation analyses performed on 60 Mycenaean and 18 coarse, handmade sherds, the authors conclude that since the early times, LHIIIA, B, the Mycenaean pottery was imported from various production centers to Kastanas probably spanning the time range up to the Iron Age; the coarse ware assumed to be made locally has a different clay composition. According to published reference data, three Mycenaean LHIIIB sherds seem to come from the Argolid.
