Describes the reconstruction of the Tate Gallery's reconstruction by Richard Hamilton of Marcel Duchamp's painting on glass, The Bride Stripped Bare by her Bachelors, Even , commonly referred to as the Large Glass . The replica, not intended as a copy but a reconstruction of Duchamp's original procedures, was created in 1966 for an Arts Council retrospective at the Tate Gallery when the original work, in Philadelphia, could not travel. In 1984, the lower glass panel of the replica shattered and broke to an unrestorable state. The authors describe the history and construction of the replica, the breaking of the lower panel, rescue efforts, the analysis and failure of the glass, and the reconstruction using Duchamp's methods and Hamilton's materials.
