The construction of folding fans is fully described. The conservation work is illustrated by presenting several case histories: that of an 18th-century double paper fan, an 18th-century single kid leather fan, and a 19th-century folding fan with double leaf of silk fabric. Cleaning of the paper fan was undertaken using water and Synperonic N and repairs effected with wheat starch paste and cellulose nitrate adhesive. A more innovative technique was used for the kid leather fan. An air abrasive was used to break down old glue repair. The methods of repair are fully documented and involved techniques familiar to both paper and textile conservators.
