Abstract
The difference in the behavior of the wood and the paint it supports is the principal cause of damage to panel paintings. One method to reduce the movement of wood is by the use of moisture barriers. This report describes the removal of old cradle, coating with Saran resin, a copolymer of vinylidene chloride and acnlonitnle (25% in methyl ethyl ketone) followed by fiberglass marquisette, and the application of a continuous auxiliary support of balsa wood blocks attached with a wax-mortar adhesive.
