Abstract
The flattening of warped panel paintings can produce dimensional change at the painted surface. Strain gages were used to measure this change in several test samples. Compression at the formerly convex surface of the wood was found to be the most common outcome of various methods of flattening. Poplar and sweetgum are the woods used for testing the degree of tension or compression induced by flattening samples.
