Abstract
The treatment of musical instruments is often intended to make them playable. Prerequisites are the observation of general conservation rules enhanced by a study of contemporary instrument making and performance practice. The uncritical application of modern conservaation techniques or of traditional methods may prove inappropriate in the restoration of an instrument's original acoustical properties.
