Abstract
The hermitage is located in the Ostrov park, in the resort Calimanesti-Caciulata, Vîlcea county, an isle which was raised with about six meters as a result of the important hydroenergetical works which took place in this area. Between 1987-1988, the team of painters-restorers cooperated with the building engineers for continuing inside too the consolidation of resistence structure because in the course of time sinking phenomena took place, while the earthquake dislodged the walls longitudinally and deeply fissured all tension zones. The fresco layer was subjected to a multitude of degradations among which foundation detachements in large amounts, serious fresco gaps and scalings of the painting layer, unsuitable superposings of re-paintings and varnishes, salts, massive deposits of dust, smoke and wax, etc. The foundation layer was consolidated by injections with caseinate of Ca, the old mortars having been removed and replaced by new ones, made of traditional materials, old lime, river sand and chopped oakum etc. The colour layer was fixed with transparent dispersion of caseinate of Ca in graded concentrations, depending on the case, all superposings and deposits being removed by physical-chemical devices from thinner to thickener solutions, according to the needs, and permanently checked. The aim was to recover the initial brightness and chromatic intensity for decyphering the artistic conception used by the master-painters. The chromatic reintegration by velatura and trattegio was performed as close as possible to the tonalities and shades of the neighbouring zones, considering the unity of the monument.
